01877 382493
Aberfoyle is a hilly course that lies only a mile out of the village on the main Stirling road. It is one of the many James Braid-designed heathland courses in the country and was established as far back as 1890. The course has stunning views west to Ben Lomond and south to the Campsie Hills, so the overall panorama is quite superb. Although relatively short, it is a tricky par 66 course with a number of neat little holes including the fourth, where a good tee shot leaves a short uphill approach to a green cut into the hillside.

A course of two halves best describes the layout. The front nine is gently undulating parkland with generous tree lined fairways. The back nine is heathland and presents the golfer with a slightly more muscular challenge!

Aigas is situated at the foot of Strathglass, five miles West of Beauly . The course snuggles between the backdrop of Aigas forest and the river Beauly. Superb views from the first tee where the fairway falls away to the distant green. The short second, "O're the Dyke", nestles between mature beeches and requires great precision. The sixth tee refreshes the mind and spirit before facing the challenge of the swinging fairway to the dramatic gorge green, where the river plunges down through the 'An Druim'. The longer hitter may take a short cut over the bend of the river, though a sliced shot here could result in a splash!

Alexandra Park Golf Club is an inviting little nine-holer situated two miles east of the city centre of Glasgow, just off the M8/A8. It is a slightly hilly parkland course with its fair share of surprises, despite being only nine holes. There are, in fact, some superb par threes, some of which are over 200-yards. On a windy day club selection can vary from a 4-iron to a 9-iron, a characteristic which makes this course so interesting to play. At barely 4, 000-yards for 18 holes and with a par of 60, big hitters will find this relatively easy, but great fun all the same. In truth, it is simply one of the best nine-hole offerings in the Central region.

The Club offers a warm welcome to both beginners and seasoned players alike and is open to visitors all year round. The course offers a challenge to all types of golfers and has splendid views of the Cromarty Firth and the surrounding hillside. Extended to nine holes in 1997 and sitting at 5,013-yards, it is reasonably short, but great fun all the same. The small greens can be tricky at times and require delicate approaches. Good shot makers will score best on this course, although you will have to keep it reasonably straight off the tee.

Alva Golf Course is well known locally for being a challenging course. Picturesque over the majority of holes, but with many natural hazards in whin, gorse, burns and gulleys, it is as beautiful as they come. Being limited to nine holes for the length of its history has not prevented many a young Alva golfer progressing towards a single figure handicap. This is most probably due to the course nature, with its small and tough to read greens, difficult lies and ever present need to be fairly straight from the tee or pay the price.

Alyth golf club is an 18-hole layout established over 100 years ago. The course demands constant attention as a combination of tree-lined fairways and diverse rolling terrain make the emphasis on precision, rather than distance, although both are required. Alyth's most demanding aspect, is its tranquil setting. Within the pines, silver birch and heather, it is easy to lose yourself in the joys of golf. It's easy to say it in writing, but if you can hold the fairways, judge the distances, choose the right clubs and have a reasonable run of success on the greens, you should come off the 18th green with a decided spring in your step.

Its tree-lined fairways are fairly wide, so wayward shots are not so greatly punished. The feature hole is the par three, 13th where you play across a valley to a raised, small green heavily guarded by bunkers. The hole is reminiscent of the famous Postage Stamp at Royal Troon. Leave with a par and you've done very well. The feature hole would have to be the par four third. A slight dog-leg left, trouble lurks in the form of water to the left of the hole. The ninth is also an interesting hole at 220-yards for a par three. The fact that this hole usually plays into the wind means that the hole more often than not plays like a par four.

The game of golf is not a new tradition in Balfron. There had been a nine-hole course at the top of the village for many years until, in 1939, Balfron Golf Club was dissolved and the land given up for agricultural use during the 2nd World War. Locals, however, wanted their course back and duly got their wish in 1994. Robin Hiseman, the respected Scottish golf architect, recreated the course from its original nine-hole layout and the result is a great country course that's playable by all. There are inspiring views of the local countryside, eerily reminiscent of playing golf in the Scottish highlands.

As Banchory has grown so has its golf course and recently the course has been extensively remodelled by renowned Scottish golf course architect John Souter Set above the bonnie banks of the Royal river - The River Dee - this picturesque par 18-hole golf course offers a challenge to golfers of all standards. Strategically placed bunkers, mature native trees and the "magnetic" River Dee provide obstacles that can test even the most accomplished player.

Barshaw
Barshaw Park, Glasgow Road, Paisley
Clyde

If you're looking for a good course that's ideal for beginners and kids then Barshaw is certainly it. This is a municipal course that's popular with local golfers, although it won't test you too much. Local kids are to be found here all the time, while those who have just picked up a club for the first time aren't top shy either. There are a number of enjoyable par threes on route and if you are reasonably accurate from 60 to 70-yards in then you have to chance to shoot a career-low score.

Bathgate
Edinburgh Road, Bathgate, West Lothian
Lothian
01506 652232
Bathgate was established in 1892 and has an illustrious history, having produced two Ryder Cup captains in Eric Brown and Bernard Gallacher. Also, heroic Ryder Cup captain Sam Torrance holds the current course record of 58, a record the club believes is likely to stand for a very long time. The course poses a variety of interesting problems which are accentuated by a burn which crosses the first and 14th fairways, and also lies immediately in front of the 17th green. The most notable feature of the course is probably the testing nature of the five par three holes.

Bearsden
Thorn Road, Bearsden, Glasgow
Clyde
0141 586 5300
Situated at the top of Thorn Road, just ten minutes' walk from Bearsden Cross, Bearsden, the second oldest club in the village outside Glasgow Golf Club, remains true to its original layout. A parkland circuit of nine holes played twice to alternate greens, the course measures some 6, 100-yards and is a challenging par 68 off the medal tees. The signature hole is undoubtedly the sixth, a long par four with a subtle dogleg encompassing out of bounds, lateral water, and an elevated green that lies beneath the remains of the Antonine Wall.

Beith
Threepwood Road, Beith, Ayrshire
Ayrshire
01505503166
Beith is a hilly parkland course with spectacular views over the Clyde Coast and surrounding areas. Converted to 18 holes in 1996 with the addition of nine new holes, the rolling fairways, small undulating greens, along with the strong winds ensure the course is a tough, but fair test for golfers of all levels. With the addition of the new nine holes, the course now has five par threes in total, along with one par five and several par fours measuring over 400-yards, including the dogleg 18th which is probably the best hole on the course.

Belleisle
Belleisle Park, Doonfoot Road, Ayr
Ayrshire
01292 441258
Situated within the Belleisle Estate with spectacular views over Arran, the course was founded in 1927 and is the work of James Braid. Indeed, far from simply bowing to the increasing demand for another course, Braid ensured this creation would boast natural features and blend into the local landscape. He fashioned 18 holes of genuine character that were as much adored in 1927 as there are now. There are only two par fours under 400 yards and a closing hole of 532 yards where you must play across a burn, negotiate a dog leg while incorporating a steep gully to finish.

Bellshill
Community Road, Orbiston, Bellshill
Clyde
01698 745124
This tree-lined course is situated in the heart of Lanarkshire overlooking Strathclyde Park. It lies between the M74 and M8 motorways and is within one mile of each. The layout was opened for play in 1905 and later extended in 1970. The second hole has recently been re-designed by Mark James and Andrew Mair. The first five holes are extremely demanding, providing one of the most difficult starts in golf. This stretch is followed by the gentler "birdie alley" where lost shots can be recovered. The signature hole is the par three 17th which involves a tricky tee shot over out of bounds, from an elevated tee.

Benbecula is a naturally flat course beside the Balivanich airfield. As a result of its good condition, it is a popular haunt for visiting golfers who are seeking a game in slightly different surroundings. There are a number of testing holes that will require great judgement and club selection, with some natural hazards dotted around the course. Although only a nine hole course, there are 18 tees in operation, so your round is anything but repetitive. Visitors can experience incredible views of the Monach Isles and Atlantic Ocean from many vantage points and an honesty box is in operation, a real island golf club tradition.

Biggar
The Park, Broughton Road, Biggar,
Clyde
01899 220319
There aren't too many golf course in Scotland, never mind the world, that lay claim to their course record being held by a former Ryder Cup player and Open Champion. Biggar, though, is not like any other golf course. Paul Lawrie's professional course record of 63 is expected to stand for some time. The course is fairly flat, although it is very scenic in parts as it basks in rolling Borders countryside, a great asset for any golf course to have. The short ninth, with water to the left and out of bounds on the right, is the signature hole and has ruined many a promising scorecard.

Bishopbriggs
Brackenbrae Road, Bishopbriggs, Glasgow
Clyde
0141 772 8938
The golf course lies within the boundaries of original Kenmure Estate purchased by Charles Stirling in 1806. A significant element of "policy" woodland broad-leafed species oak, ash, beech etc established at that time still remains today. The Bishopbriggs burn which meanders through the course all adds to an enjoyable and challenging golfing experience. The 16th is an excellent par four that requires a good drive to gain position for an exacting second shot. The drive, often shortened by a sloping fairway, can leave a difficult shot to a green across a burn that runs along the right side of the fairway. The golf course has went thro' signifcant changes over the last 2 years with 3 new holes built and a 6 mini hole and driving range now available

Bishopshire
Kinnesswood, Kinross
Fife
01592 773224
Located in one of the most beautiful areas of Scotland in which to play golf, Kinross, in Fife, Bishopshire Golf Club is a wonderful nine-hole heathland course that is fit to test any level of player. It is situated three miles east of the village off the M90. It exhibits wonderful views across to Loch Leven and the Fife hills and is an absolute pleasure to play on a warm, sunny evening. It can provide quite a stern test if the wind picks up and is a little tiring on the legs. The locals, incidentally, refer to it as 'Coronary Hill'.
